Interested in joining the Junior Striders?

If you are a runner or aspiring runner, aged 11 to 17 then you can join our thriving Junior Striders section – stay motivated, nail your technique and smash your personal goals!

Beginners are very welcome to come along and try one of our club sessions to see if they like it, and meet our dedicated Juniors coaching team. Then if you would like to join, you can find all the relevant information in the membership section.

Billericay Striders is an England Athletics and Clubmark accredited club, providing a safe and fun environment for young runners to train for and compete in races, from school sports to district sports, county cross country events, and regular Park Runs.

Our Juniors also regularly volunteer to help marshal local fixtures and running events, and as a group enjoy helping out with local charity work. We also have great success in helping our Junior Striders do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Do come along to a Juniors club night and give it a try; or if you would like some further information beforehand, then please email our Juniors coach, Dave Sweet >

What to expect on a Junior Striders Club Night

We meet on Tuesday evenings in our club room at West Billericay Community Centre at Hannakins arm, Rosebay Avenue just before 7pm, and the sessions last from 7pm–8pm. The Juniors coaching team – led by Dave Sweet, David Cunnew, Christine Deacon, Sue Keiller and Keith Walker – will be there to help you!

In summer the sessions mainly take place at Queen’s Park, just a short jog from the club meeting room. There may be occasional sessions around the cricket pitch at Lake Meadows, or on the grass track at Mayflower School.

The evening consists of some warm-up drills, the main session itself, a cool down (usually the jog back to the club room), and finally some stretching back at base. The main part of the session is usually about 30 minutes in length including recovery times, and is designed to be enjoyable, hopefully fun, but to get you working at a higher intensity than your normal exercise might possibly entail – and to complement any other sporting activities you may do inside or outside of school.

In the winter months, once the light evenings go around October, we train on the pavements near to the Community Centre, with sessions like hill reps, an endurance-type session; something called the steps, which incorporates uphill, downhill and flat running; and bleep tests.

The main objectives of the sessions are TELE:

Juniors taking part in race events

We actively encourage the Juniors to take part in such events as:

• Junior Park Runs, or Park Runs with their parents if they are under 11 (distance 5k)
• Crown to Crown races at Westley Heights Country Park (5k)
• Skylark runs at the Wick, Wickford (3k)
• The Club Handicap four times a year in March, June, September & December (approx. 4.5k)
• And if the coaches believe it will be of benefit, the Saturday Essex XC League races when the venue is local

We actively encourage parents to help us sort transport to the event venues where possible and to come along and support!
